Decker's family relocated to Louisiana in the age of nine. Decker then won a local talent competition for her performance of "I I'd like to be a Cowboy's Sweetheart" from Patsy Montana. Decker was a resident of Georgia in the year she turned aged 15. She began writing songs and making frequent trips to Nashville seeking any record deals. At the age of 17 when she was 17, a Big Yellow Dog Records representative saw her work and began to sell her songs to labels and musicians. Decker agreed to sign a contract with Island/Def Jam after Mercury Records' president David Massey passed her demos to L.A. Reid, head of Island/Def Jam. Jessie James, her moniker for the album she released under that name at the end of August, 2009 was self-titled. Jessie James had a moderately popular debut album. Wanted, a song of the album, reached the Top 40 singles chart. However while Decker has always believed she was as a singer from the country genre, the album was produced and marketed using a popular audience in mind. Two more singles off the album, Decker struggled with the label's management for more control of her music. her next single Boys in the Summer was an album that was more country-oriented. Decker's sophomore studio album was announced with the title Daughter of a Gypsy, or Sweet American Dreams. Mercury was able to cancel it, as three of her country singles performed poorly. The album was later canceled.
